The term “Pass the Port” refers to the rather eccentric British etiquette regarding the serving of port wine at a formal dinner. The wine should be served from a flat bottomed (and preferably glass crystal) decanter to the person sitting to the right of the server, and then passed to the left (i.e. the port side of the ship) without touching the table on its way around. A respectable diner does not ask for the port to be passed along, but instead asks “Do you know the Bishop of Norwich?” If the holder of the decanter does not understand the question they are told “He’s a terribly good chap, but he always forgets to pass the port”
